National Grid has agreed to purchase 29.5 hectares of land on Teesside to build Britain’s largest electricity substation. The project could supply power to a nearby datacentre, part of the UK’s push to expand AI infrastructure.

The land is owned by Teesworks, a local private-public partnership. The move follows reports that the UK government selected the site for a new AI datacentre, with planning applications submitted for a 500,000 sq m project last year.

The substation is intended to support large-scale AI infrastructure in the region as the UK seeks to strengthen its digital economy.

Why it matters

The substation could provide the necessary energy to support a major AI datacentre, potentially advancing the UK’s digital infrastructure goals.
